Our leaders are responsible for providing strategic direction and governance, ensuring effective financial and risk management oversight and continued organisational viability and sustainability. Also, and perhaps most importantly, they’re custodians of Fred Hollows’ legacy and reputation.

Our Trustees

Nicola Watkinson

(Chair)

Nicola Watkinson is Managing Director, International Trade and Investment at TheCityUK, an organisation that represents the interests of the UK’s most significant financial and related professional services (FRPS) companies. Her role focuses on positioning the UK’s FRPS industry for future success, improving global market access, developing supportive policies and removing impediments to trade and investment. 

With a successful career as a senior diplomat with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), Nicola has led a network of regional teams around the world, including in Europe, South Asia and the Americas. Nicola leads the diversity and inclusion work for TheCityUK, having also been the global diversity and inclusion champion for Austrade. She first became associated with Fred Hollows Foundation when living in New York, as part of the North American Advisory Council.

Jennifer Dunstan

Jennifer Dunstan is a Partner and Head of Fund Investor Relations at 3i. Since joining 3i in June 2005 she has co-led the acquisition of the Mayborn Group and co-led the take privates of Telecity Group and Redbus to create TelecityRedbus. In November 2007 she was responsible for the acquisition of Agent Provocateur. She currently sits on the boards of Mayborn, Agent Provocateur and Hobbs.
 
Prior to joining 3i Jennifer spent nine years at Terra Firma Capital Partners and Nomura’s Principal Finance Group (PFG), where she was Managing Director. In addition to numerous portfolio responsibilities, major deals that she led there include the privatisation of Angel Train Contracts and acquisition of Inn Partnership. Before PFG/Terra Firma, Jennifer started her career as a solicitor for Allen, Allen & Hemsley in Sydney and London. She holds a BA degree and LLB from the University of Sydney.

Afzal Ismail

Afzal has recently joined The Foundation and comes with 30 years' experience of working in the financial services sector, mainly from an accountancy and audit perspective. His risk and control experience spans wholesale banking, asset management, and insurance business lines and functions such as risk management, legal and compliance, treasury and operations.

He has held various senior internal audit positions and is currently the Managing Director responsible for the audit of Group Support Functions at Standard Chartered Bank. Prior to this, he worked in Internal Audit departments at Nordea, Barclays, Merrill Lynch and Standard Bank London, in various international locations such as the UK, USA, Scandinavia, South Africa and the Middle East. He started his career as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG. Afzal has a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies and a MSc in Finance. 

Michael Johnson AM

Michael has been involved with The Foundation from its very beginning. He was one of the team that, along with Fred and Gabi Hollows, set up The Foundation and has been a member of the Board, with two short breaks, since its establishment in 1992. Michael was appointed by the Board as Co-Deputy Chair in May of 2019, he is a Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation (HK) Limited, a Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation Kenya, and member of the Board’s Governance and Nominations Committee and Programs and Partnerships Committee.

Michael is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at UNSW. He has had extensive experience as a professional economist, educator, researcher as well as engagement in the practical work of delivering development programs. He currently teaches a Masters course on international aid at UNSW as well as giving occasional lectures in development studies and economics. He is also an editor of the research and policy journal, the Economic and Labour Relations Review.
 
In 2015, Michael was invested as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the blind and those with low vision, to education, and to the community.

Dr Aeesha NJ Malik

Dr Aeesha Malik is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, with training in both clinical ophthalmology and public health. Her work focuses on reducing childhood blindness and inequity through improving health systems, integrating eye care into child health policies, and improving Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) programmes in low and middle income countries. 

She has extensive experience in clinical work and training of health workers across Africa, Asia and South America. Dr Malik has been appointed as a Faculty member of the Chinese Academy of Eye Health in Paediatric Ophthalmology. In Tanzania she and her colleagues created a model for integrating eye care into a WHO/UNICEF child health programme which was taken up as national health policy. She also led a network strengthening ROP services across Africa and Asia through building strong collaborative partnerships, training ROP teams and changing national health policy. 

Dr Malik was previously a Clinical Advisor at the UK Department of Health on national eye health policy, and is still a Health Policy Advisor to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health. Her research highlighted the geographical variation in sight impairment and the value of eye care in the UK. This led to working on a number of strategies to improve the quality of eye care services in conjunction with WHO, VISION 2020, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the UK Vision Strategy.

Kenneth Carol van Toll

Kenneth Carol van Toll specialises in institutional fundraising and worked with several international NGOs such as BRAC International, Global Reporting Initiative, and KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation. She has worked on themes such as TB control and global health, sustainability reporting, education, agriculture, emergency response, and independent media and press freedom in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. 

Kenneth started her career in journalism working as a TV news producer in Indonesia for press agency Reuters and other international media for several years. In 2002 she moved to the international development sector and since then focuses on program development, strategic planning, and institutional fundraising. She currently is the director of Global Development & Partnerships at the international NGO What Design Can Do based in Amsterdam.

Jennifer Younan

Jennifer Younan is a Partner in the International Arbitration and the Public International Law practices of Shearman & Sterling LLP.  She has over 20 years of experience advising and representing companies, State-owned entities and States in investment treaty and commercial arbitrations, with a particular focus on emerging markets. Jennifer is also well known for advising on cutting-edge and topical issues in the field of public international law.

Jennifer is active in the Firm's pro bono programme, advising States, international human rights organisations, charities and individuals on variety of issues, including international humanitarian law, human rights, media freedom, biodiversity conservation and directors' duties and climate change risks.

Prior to joining Shearman & Sterling LLP, Jennifer clerked for the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG at the High Court of Australia.

Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales, and Bachelor of Civil Law and Master of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. She is admitted to practice in New South Wales (Australia), England and Wales, and Paris.

Our Staff

Nick Virr

Head of Development UK, Europe and Middle East

Following a 20-year career building his technology businesses in Australia, Nick has spent 13 years creating sustainable impact in East Africa (Uganda, Tanzania,  Ethiopia and Kenya) and South Asia (Nepal and Bangladesh).

Nick has designed and delivered solutions for economic empowerment, climate adaptation, renewable energy, agriculture, water and sanitation, and health and education for International non-government organisations such as Shared Interest, Renewable World, BRAC, and now The Fred Hollows Foundation. He has first-hand experience delivering impact, in challenging contexts using a wide variety of finance, business, development, public-private-partnership and social enterprise models. 

Nick has a 1st Class Joint Honours degree in International Development and East Asian Studies and an MSc in Sustainability (Environment and Development). He seeks to play his part at The Foundation by combining his commercial, sustainability, and development experience and passion in a way that expands and diversifies our partnerships, innovations, and financial resources to help tackle the global eye-sight challenge at significant scale.

Margaret Hobbs

Finance Manager - UK, US & HK

Margaret started at The Fred Hollows Foundation in 2022 playing a key role in managing the fundraising offices’ financial reporting, Treasury, and statutory compliance functions.

Margaret has significant experience in the registered charity and limited company sector. She has also worked as a management consultant and as a teacher. Her most recent role was as Finance Manager at the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art but she is delighted now to be supporting the life-changing work that we do at The Foundation.

Manishkumar Mehta

Partner Portfolio Manager

Manishkumar Mehta has been working for the Fred Hollows Foundation since July 2017 starting as Regional Operations Coordinator (East Asia) and progressed to Partner Portfolio Manager (Global) role in 2021 providing his vital support in policies, processes, frameworks, implementation of partnership domain including leading on Partner capacity building globally.

Manish brings over 28 years of Non-Profit sector experience from 8 out of top 10 international NGOs such as AKDN, Oxfam, Plan-International, Tear Fund, UNICEF, Save the Children, Red Cross and The Fred Hollows Foundation covering Sudan, Kenya, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Thailand, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, China, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Eritrea, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Myanmar.  Manish has served in various senior management roles providing strategic and operational leadership, managing people, partners, programs, and compliances.
 
The spectrum of Manish’s experience covers program quality, inclusion (gender, disability, ethnic community rights), partnership (GO and NGOs), fundraising, grants management, safeguarding, internal and external compliances in various sectors such as natural resources (land, water and forestry), SWC (soil and water conservation), Public Health & communicable diseases, WASH (infrastructure and governance), risk reduction and resilience, civil infrastructure (irrigation, shelter, water, and sanitation), DRR & climate change adaptation, education in emergency and leading humanitarian/emergency responses.

Dr Lila Raj Puri

Medical Advisor - Asia

Dr Lila Raj Puri is the Medical Advisor- Asia to The Fred Hollows Foundation and Alina Vision’s global Medical Advisor. An ophthalmologist, oculoplastic surgeon and public health specialist, Dr Lila completed his degree in Ophthalmology at the Institute of Medicine, Nepal, fellowship in oculoplasty from Ludwiig Maximillians University in Munich and Master of Public Health for Eye Care from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He is an ophthalmologist with over 14 years of experience in clinical and surgical management of eye diseases, and hospital management. He also has vast clinical experience, having performed more than 70,000 cataract surgeries.

Previously, Dr Lila worked as an ophthalmologist and the Medical Director of the Sagarmatha Choudhary Eye Hospital in Lahan, one of Nepal’s largest eye hospitals. As an Associate Professor, he has trained national and international ophthalmologists in cataract surgeries, as well as overseeing the training of optometrists, residents, and nurses.

He has keen interest in research with several publications in national and international peer reviewed journals. He advises on programmes and projects on eye health   in the Asia region and leads the development and implementation of clinical governance frameworks. He also supports ophthalmologist training and quality assurance at Alina Vision Hospital.

Louisa Syrett

Head of Gender Advocacy & Engagement

Over her career, Louisa has developed a deep understanding of Palestine, the Gulf and key countries across sub-Saharan Africa, where she has cultivated a number of high-profile strategic partnerships.

Louisa has brought more than 15 years of experience in senior roles to The Foundation, including six years at the British Council, where she founded the global innovation challenge #ideaschangelives and empowered colleagues to create strategic partnerships with other organisations where the British Council could extend its impact and reach, and be more innovative. Louisa also spent three years at Save the Children, where she led income growth of 926% through a range of new partnerships that focussed on supporting the newly launched UK poverty portfolio. 

Louisa holds a Bachelor of Arts (Politics and History) from the University of Melbourne and a Masters of Arts (Cyberculture and the Law) from Macquarie University. She is a member of the BOND SDG Steering Committee, Vice Chair for Sutton Vision, a small sight-loss charity in the London borough of Sutton, and Vice Chair for the John and Joan Corfield Charitable Trust, a small charity dedicated to supporting young people involved in sport in Streatham.

Founding Director

Gabi Hollows

Meet the heart and soul of The Foundation, Gabi Hollows. She is an extraordinary woman: a national treasure, an Order of Australia recipient, a skilled orthoptist and the champion of The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Gabi knows a little about having eye problems. She had eye surgery when she was three years old and while it sparked her interest in medicine, little did she know this was the beginning of what was to become her lifelong work.

CEO

Ian Wishart

Ian Wishart is one of Australia’s most experienced international development leaders. He has spent the past 28 years involved in virtually every aspect of aid and human rights including emergency relief operations, long term development and influential policy and advocacy initiatives. 

Ian joined The Fred Hollows Foundation as its new CEO on March 5, 2018. 

Executive Leadership Team

Ian Wishart is one of Australia’s most accomplished CEOs in the global humanitarian sector, having dedicated his 30-year career to helping people in poverty.

He is one of the few people who has worked at virtually every level of international development, including emergency relief operations, long term development and influential policy and advocacy initiatives.

Ian joined The Fred Hollows Foundation as its new CEO on March 5, 2018. Prior to this, he had been the CEO of Plan International since 2001, helping to improve the lives of children and equality for girls across the world.

Ian’s experience growing up in pre-independence Papua New Guinea in the 1970s kindled a lifelong passion to support those impacted by poverty, disaster and disease.

Ian has also been a leader in the sector as a former Vice President and Director of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), the peak council for Australia aid and development organisations.

Ian holds a Science Degree from the Australian National University, a Graduate Diploma in Education from Canberra University and an Executive MBA from Mt Eliza Business School. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the AsiaLink Leadership Program.

As Business Operations Executive Director, Claire leads The Foundation’s Finance, People and Organisational Development, Technology, Business Services and Legal, Governance, Risk and Compliance teams.

Claire joined The Foundation in 2022 and brings with her 27 years’ experience across multiple business disciplines including Finance, IT, Risk, Compliance, Franchising, Business Integration and Project Delivery. Her expertise is in professional services however also spans to retail and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in ASX listed, chartered, commercial and partnership settings and includes corporate roles as Chief Financial Officer at Dentons, Chief Financial Officer at Freedom, Director, Transaction Services at Deloitte Australia and Financial Controller at Herbert Smith Freehills.

Claire has delivered continuous improvement projects for large finance functions including decision support, financial control, transactional finance and change management. She is CA qualified with Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma.

Claire leads the Business Operation team, which provides opportunities to contribute to the Foundation’s work through business enablement and improvement.

Jennifer has extensive experience working in government and the not for profit sector, leading a wide range of social marketing campaigns aimed at raising awareness, changing behaviour and influencing key decision makers. She has worked across the health, disability and international development sectors and has a reputation for fostering collaboration and delivering results by applying innovative strategic approaches to advocacy.

Under Jennifer’s leadership, Vision 2020 Australia was transformed from an aspiring peak body to a highly respected and successful organisation with a reputation as an international leader in the eye health and vision care sector.

Jennifer joined The Foundation in 2016. In addition to managing global partnerships and leading advocacy efforts across The Foundation, she is a champion for gender equity.

Jennifer is a Trustee on the Board of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness where she continues to promote positive action towards gender and inclusion, chairing the Gender Equity Work Group. Jennifer also chairs the Diabetic Retinopathy Work Group.

As a senior fundraising professional, Nicola Stewart has more than 20 years’ experience in major Australian charities including The Fred Hollows Foundation, The Heart Foundation and Mission Australia.

In her current role of Executive Director of Public Affairs at The Fred Hollows Foundation, Nicola heads up fundraising in Australia and internationally.

Supported by a talented fundraising team, Nicola has lifted annual fundraising income from $8 million to over $70 million in 14 years, with a diverse fundraising portfolio including face-to-face, direct marketing, telemarketing, major donor and corporate programs, digital fundraising and community campaigns.

Jon has previously held senior positions in international organisations around the world. Some of these include Global Program Director at CBM International, Program Director at Marie Stopes International South Sudan, Manager, Public Health & Advocacy Projects at the FDI World Dental Federation and Regional Director for Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean at Amigos de las Américas.

Jon also founded an NGO called Digital Roots, an organisation that empowers communities to document their history by using digital technologies to create virtual museums.

Jon holds a M.Sc. Health, Community & Development from The London School of Economics and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics.

Kelvin Storey joined the Foundation in 2014 following a very successful 10 years’ experience in leading the design and delivery of comprehensive development and health programmes across Africa and beyond. Kelvin has served in several local and international capacities and roles including CEO, Research & Policy Director, Economist, Technical Advisor and Consultant with local, regional, and global organisations. 

Kelvin is currently The Foundation’s Director of Global Programs Implementation and is responsible for providing front line leadership and strategic support to the global network of The Foundation's country programs covering over 25. He brings expertise in strengthening program implementation modalities for greater efficiency and impact; capacity building and developing project winning teams and culture; and strengthening country and global partnerships to tackle the current burden of avoidable blindness and building systems for sustainable comprehensive eye health services for the future. 

Joanna is an experienced Human Resources professional with a wealth of expertise across finance and health sectors having started her career in not-for-profit organisations including Royal Flying Doctors and Mater Health Services. She also brings invaluable commercial experience in law and financial services and now welcomes the chance to return to a mission-based organisation with The Foundation.

Joanna has a well-rounded skillset in building inspiring teams and creating world class talent development programs. She also has a strong operational base in employment law, governance and compliance in multiple global jurisdictions, and a successful track record of influencing and coaching boards and executive teams. She has a passion for working with leaders to drive and improve the performance of their business through their people. 

Joanna has a Bachelor of Business degree majoring in Human Resources Management, is a Certified Member of the Australian Human Resources Institute and is a Certified Practitioner Coach, Europe Mentoring & Coaching Council. 

Alison Hill joined The Fred Hollows Foundation in 2015 after a career as a newspaper journalist and editor, a media adviser and chief of staff to State and Federal Government Ministers and working as a communications and government relations specialist.

She oversees the global team which is responsible for telling Fred Hollows’ inspiring and life-changing stories and maintaining the strength of The Foundation’s brand.

Alison is passionate about The Foundation’s mission to end avoidable blindness and championing equity for women to access eye health care and to be leaders in the sector. She has taken a leading role in helping other NGOs understand the value of communications through various sector-wide working groups.

Alison is often called on as a guest lecturer at universities in Sydney and Brisbane to speak about crisis communications, how to ensure good policy is not swamped by poor communication and how to use media and social media to campaign for people in the legal system.
