Sharing Restored Sight Story One: The One Millionth Artificial Intraocular Lens
22 years ago, Zubaida Bibi received the one millionth artificial intraocular lens produced by The Fred Hollows Foundation.
By implanting the clear artificial lens, Zubaida's cataract was removed, allowing her to regain her sight and no longer rely on her family for care.
To make cataract surgery more affordable for more people, Professor Hollows, the founder of The Fred Hollows Foundation, dedicated himself to establishing artificial lens factories in Eritrea and Nepal, significantly reducing production costs. This made cataract surgery more accessible and helped more people avoid blindness.
To date, the factories have produced over 8 million artificial lenses. With your support, we can help more people regain their sight.
Sharing Restored Sight Story Two: I can help my family now!
Imagine the world in front of you gradually blurring. You are unable to read school textbooks clearly, and the road outside your home is filled with danger.
Alexcis, a teenager, had cataracts in both eyes, preventing him from reading and writing. Because of his poor vision, he was afraid to leave his house. Although cataracts can be treated, Alexcis’ family couldn't afford the medical expenses, plunging his world into darkness. Fortunately, The Fred Hollows Foundation was able to help.
With our help, Alexcis underwent cataract surgery, and in less than a year, his life was transformed - he could read again, play in the sun, and explore the world. Most importantly, he no longer needed assistance from his family and could even help care for his newborn sister!
One surgery not only restored his sight but also renewed his hope, leading him towards a new and bright future. This is the power of restored sight. 💛✨
Sharing Restored Sight Story Three: See you at school!
Seven-year-old Cam lives 25 kilometers from Quang Ngai Province, south of Xuan Truong, Vietnam, and has been blind for four years due to cataracts.
Just walking in the sunlight caused her eyes to ache from the intense light. Lacking financial resources and support, she couldn't access basic eye care.
Fortunately, The Fred Hollow Foundation held an eye check-up camp at a school in the area and discovered Cam's condition, providing her with surgery to restore her sight. The day after the surgery, Cam could already see and happily returned to school to continue learning.
Your monthly donations illuminate her life.

Ending avoidable blindness
"One of the great joys of my life is having been part of the training of Sanduk Ruit and his training others." - Fred Hollows
The Founder of The Fred Hollows Foundation, Prof. Fred Hollows believed in empowering people. That’s why we invest in training a range of people from community health workers to surgeons. Building local skills has always, and will always, be at the heart of our work.

Training
Fred believed that training and empowering local people was the key to sustainable change. The Foundation trains doctors, nurses and health care workers so they can recognise, diagnose, refer and treat eye problems in their communities.

Doorstep diagnosis
Community health workers are a vital link between patients and eye health services. Trained by The Foundation, they visit communities, diagnosing a range of medical conditions and referring people to medical clinics, hospitals and doctors. Performing initial consultations like these is essential, because potentially damaging eye health issues are identified before they become critical.

Fred’s passion for teaching
Fred was an advocate of hands on learning. He firmly believed there should always be three people in a room: a teacher, a student and a patient. Whether it was in an operating theatre in Sydney or Hanoi, Fred took great delight in seeing the moment of understanding in his students’ eyes.

The last lesson
Despite being very ill with cancer, Fred discharged himself from hospital in July 1992 to fly to Hanoi. There he wanted to fulfil his promise to train over 300 Vietnamese eye specialists in modern eye surgery techniques.
