2024 Fred Hollows Humanity Award ended successfully!

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award 2024 recognised 71 primary students

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award – which is celebrating its seventh year – honoured the students for making a positive difference in their community. This year’s recipients included 13 students who initiated a school eye health awareness campaign while others were recognised for helping to raise awareness of mental health, animal welfare and local environment protection.  

The Fred Hollows Foundation Hong Kong Advisory Committee Member and ophthalmologist Dr Godfrey Lam said a record number of applications – 500 students and 75 schools - were received this year. “We are proud to see so many students committed to bringing positive impact to the community.” 

“Professor Fred Hollows dedicated his life to helping and empowering others to help themselves and restoring sight to some of the world’s poorest people. He would be very proud of the contribution these students are making.”

The Fred Hollows Eye Health Ambassador

Aberdeen St. Peter's Catholic Primary School 

Thirteen students from Aberdeen St. Peter's Catholic Primary School have initiated an eye health awareness campaign called "Eye Doctor GO." The aim is to raise awareness among students and community members about eye health. The activities include eye health surveys; vision testing; eye health promotion events; eye health booth games and sharing stories of visual impairment. During the campaign, the students invited a registered Chinese medicine practitioner to teach them holistic methods of eye protection, such as eye exercises and food that is good for the eyes.

Au Choi Ni, St. Margaret's Co-Educational English Secondary And Primary School  

Choi Ni has been actively participating in volunteering with her family since she was young. Through the Hair of Hope Cancer Foundation, Choi Ni donated her hair which she had been growing for two years to help create wigs for children with cancer. Additionally, during a trip to Malaysia, Choi Ni visited the local nursing homes and orphanages and brought small gifts, stationery and daily necessities for the underprivileged.

Lam Sum Kiu, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School 

Sum Kiu is a compassionate animal lover dedicated to helping stray animals in Hong Kong. She volunteers regularly at the "Animal Rescue Shelter Home" to take care of abandoned pets. She also takes the lead in organising talks, filming videos, creating posters, and setting up booth activities to raise awareness of pet abandonment and is an advocate for adoption.

Buddhist Wong Cheuk Um Primary School

During the pandemic, quarantine and border restrictions led to a severe shortage of fresh produce. Ten students from Buddhist Wong Cheuk Um Primary School initiated a project called "Water Under Grain" and developed hydroponic machines to grow vegetables. The aim was to help low-income and vulnerable communities grow vegetables at home using hydroponic methods, enabling them to enjoy fresh produce. The students conducted online sessions with eight elderly homes and designed hydroponic systems for the elderly residents, teaching them to grow vegetables at the elderly home.

Noelle Lui, Bloom KKCA Academy

During the pandemic, Noelle created free affirmation cards available for children to spread positivity and a growth mindset. Noelle also shared about her experiences as a TEDx speaker, hoping to inspire more children about the importance of awe walk and getting into nature for a healthy mind and body. Noelle also co-authored and illustrated a book called “Mysterious Sham Wan” to teach children about green sea turtles and to promote the message of protecting nature and the beautiful Sham Wan Beach on Lamma Island.   

 
Junior Ambassadors

Yeung Pui Hei, Aberdeen St. Peter's Catholic Primary School 

Pui Hei is a strong advocate for the environment. He created an edible food wrap and actively promotes and shares it with others. He incorporates environmental protection into his daily life, advocating for plastic reduction, recycling and upcycling old clothes, inspiring friends and family to act together. 

 

Tang Tsz Yat, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School 

Tsz Yat participated in conservation activities through Dream Starter and learnt that eels were an endangered species. Tsz Yat and her team created a book called "Eel Tales" to promote eel conservation. They conducted theatrical performances at Cyberport and distributed illustrated books and promotional stickers at restaurants, urging a reduction in the sale of eel products. They also reached out to kindergartens, conducting promotional activities and theatrical performances at schools to promote the importance of conservation.

Chloe Lau, Si Yuan School Of The Precious Blood 

Chloe participated in an activity organised by Amazing Teens where she visited a blind association and experienced blindness with simulation glasses. She learnt about the challenges that blind people face and inspired her to do more for visually impaired people. 

Lo Ka Hang, Yaumati Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) 
Ka Hang has participated in a visual impairment experience activity, gaining a deep understanding of how to assist, guide, and give directions to visually impaired individuals and hopes to do more to help visually impaired individuals in the future.   

Andy Pang, Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division

Andy is actively involved in environmental issues. After participating in the “Love the Marine Environment” course, he learnt about the biodiversity of the Hong Kong seas and advocates to stop overfishing and the pollution of the waters of Hong Kong. He is now engaged in finding solutions that can help Hong Kong's waters and is committed to protecting the marine environment.    

Abby Chan, Marymount Primary School

Abby actively participates in animal protection volunteer activities in Hong Kong. She cares about the welfare of stray animals and supports the work of animal shelters. Her dedicated efforts have contributed to improving the living conditions of animals and raising public awareness of animal rights.  

Caleb Cheung, VNSAA St. Hilary's School 

Caleb and his parents went to Tung Chau Street Park to provide meals to homeless people. He hopes to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless and to contribute to improving their situation.

Wong Yik Tung, Wong Tai Sin Government Primary School 

Yik Tung is actively involved in community service, including helping elderly people living alone so they can purchase daily necessities. She also volunteers for a community arts non-profit organisation and participates in stage performances and street shows.  

Ernest Mok, Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division

Ernest participated in a volunteer program called "Animal Care" to improve the living conditions of abandoned pets in a shelter in Yuen Long. Ernest helped cleaning their shelters, played with them, and helped them with grooming.  

Yeung On Kiu, Xianggang Putonghua Yanxishe Primary School of Science and Creativity 

On Kiu makes monthly visits to the elderly living alone by bringing them small provisions, spending time with them and keeping them company. 

Lam Hin Tsun, St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School 

Hin Tsun along with his classmates designed products for the elderly, including a football machine that combines Chinese historical figures with age-friendly technology, allowing the elderly to play and interact with their grandchildren, stimulating their brains, promoting social interaction, and keeping them physically active.  

Weng Yi Lok, Leung Kui Kau Lutheran Primary School 

Yi Lok regularly participates in volunteering services including visits to nursing homes. He helps to arrange makeup and hairstyling for the elderly to have their photos taken.  

Louis Kwok, Yun Wing Tung, Kwan Hoi Ching, Chim Ya Lok, Hsu Kin Hei, Pan Kai Ngai, Colette Ng, Osmond Wong, Sin Ho Tin, Tong Sum Yue, Samantha Yeung 
S.K.H. Kei Yan Primary School 

This group of students showed initiative by creating a service for classmates who face stress or unhappiness. They also designed a "Tree Hole" where students can write down their troubles and express their unhappy emotions. 

Choi Hoi Ching, King's College Old Boys' Association Primary School 

Hoi Ching has actively participated in volunteering activities since he was young. During the Chinese New Year celebration this year, she showcased her skills by creating Lunar New Year gifts to the elderly. 

Lui Pak Yee, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School   

Pak Yee actively participates in volunteering activities including visiting visually impaired people at the Bradbury Care and Attention Home for the Aged Blind in Tuen Mun. This helped him feel a renewed sense of purpose to care for underprivileged communities.  

Choi Seung Yau, Pooi To Primary School 

Seung Yau has been participating in elderly visits since a young age. He makes small handicrafts and gifts to give to the elderly and prepares games, activities and performances to bring them joy.  

To Long Yin, Yaumati Catholic Primary School 

Long Yin regularly participates in various activities to take care of the elderly living alone, inviting them to exercise and play electronic games together.  

Lau Sin Tung, Man Kiu Association Primary School

Sin Tung actively participates in various volunteering services. She and her classmates visited Caritas Ngau Tau Kok Community Centre to interact with a group of elderly people. They also collaborated with their classmates to design a blueprint for improving the community. They hope to enhance the community facilities to better suit the elderly residents and establish a livable community. 

Leung Ho Lam, Canossa Primary School (San Po Kong)
Ho Lam has been actively involved in community service. He participated in a "Dragon Volunteers" event , visiting elderly people living alone and bringing them love and joy.  

Wang Sze Nam, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School   
Sze Nam participated in the HiVE collaborative project initiated by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, learning how to use immersive virtual reality to assist people with disabilities to experience virtual travel. 

Avery Siu, Pui Ching Primary School 
Avery participated in volunteering activities with the Scout Association of Ho Man Tin District, visiting 600 elderly individuals living alone and gifting them with care packages. She also designed a physical and mental health questionnaire for welfare organisations to follow up on the well-being of the elderly. 

Lau Ying Yu, Pui Ching Primary School 
Ying Yu is actively engaged in community environmental activities. She participated in an outdoor cleaning activity organised by the Scout Association with the East Kowloon Regional Hiking Trail Maintenance Team last December.  
Pang Cheuk Lam, Leung Kui Kau Lutheran Primary School  
Cheuk Lam is actively engaged in her church's volunteering activities including providing meal boxes for impoverished families and taking the lead at her children's group at the church to plan booth activities for the community carnival. 

Ko Sin Yin, Po Leung Kuk Vicwood K.T. Chong No.2 Primary School 
Sin Yin actively participates in environmental activities and volunteering services organised by the Tuen Mun community, sharing messages about environmental conservation, daily energy-saving methods, and channels for recycling electronic waste.  

Gwen Li, P.L.K. Fung Ching Memorial Primary School 
Gwen is actively engaged in various volunteering activities, including volunteering at the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association and assisting the visually impaired in Hong Kong. She also participates in beach clean-up and brings gifts to elderly in Sau Mau Ping. 

Lee Chi Yan, Yaumati Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) 
Chi Yan is passionate about environmental conservation. Even in hot weather, he refuses to use air conditioning and opts for fans instead. He also actively participates in tree planting activities, beach cleaning and garbage collection activities.   

Tam Zi Ching, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School   
Zi Ching is a frequent volunteer. She actively engages in various volunteering services, including visiting the elderly and taking part in cross-social enterprise education and elderly art workshops.  

Kong Pui Ching, Diocesan Girls' Junior School    
Pui Ching is an animal lover. She volunteers at an animal rescue shelter and Hong Kong Bunny Rescue to assist in caring for abandoned pets living in the shelters. 

Chan Wang Sing, NTWJWAL Leung Sing Tak Primary School 
Wang Shing represented his school at the "Inno Expo @ Tai Po 2024," introducing his team's innovative products to the public. He hopes to continue learning about innovation and technology and to design products related to eye health. 

Forest Lee, HKMLC Wong Chan Sook Ying Memorial School   
Forest volunteered in Thailand by helping young orphans and teaching English and Mandarin to youth in the country’s northern mountainous region. He also contributes to fundraising for children in northern Thailand by participating in charity food sales events.

Tam Sum, St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School   
Tam Sum has a strong interest in environmental protection and actively participates in discussions about the waste charging scheme. He strongly believes that everyone can contribute to protecting the environment.  

Angus Tsui, Yaumati Catholic Primary School (Hoi Wang Road) 
Angus is actively involved in environmental protection activities including waste utilisation, recycling of school uniforms, and paper recycling programs to enhance community sustainability. 

Ko Wai Yu, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School   
Wai Yu participated in the winter clothes distribution activity organised by The Salvation Army, assisting in packaging and distributing supplies to the elderly, providing them with warmth during winter. 

Ko On Yee, Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School   
On Yee participated in the "Amazing Teens” community activity, helping collect wastepaper. She also assisted in packaging and distributing winter clothing to the elderly.  

Fu Ho Chun, HHCKLA Buddhist Chan Shi Wan Primary School
Ho Chun frequently dedicates his time and efforts to participate in volunteering activities, including visiting elderly people living alone and distributing small gifts to marginalised communities.
