What we do

The Fred Hollows Foundation has a very clear goal – to end avoidable blindness. Every single day we work towards providing high quality eye care to people in disadvantaged communities. This is how we do it.

Ending Avoidable Blindness

Every time we restore someone’s sight, it also brings back their independence, ability to work, or get an education. Ending avoidable blindness through medication, surgery, education, prevention and training is a part of helping people out of poverty, which we see proof of every day.

Innovation and Research

We honour Fred Hollows’ pioneering spirit by investing in better ways to address avoidable blindness around the world. Our innovation and research portfolio will make eye care more effective, affordable, and accessible through investment in new technologies, and pilot cutting-edge approaches to deliver and finance eye care.

Gender, Equity and Inclusion

We strive to become a leader in delivering evidence-based policy, programming, and advocacy to achieve equity in eye health. We recognize that blindness and vision impairment impact the following groups of people at greater rates: women, older people, displaced peoples, people living with a disability, and people affected by income inequality. To change this, we must find ways to overcome inequity in access to eye health services.

Advocacy

We’re using our position as a leading international development organization to put eye health on the global agenda. Working in partnership with like-minded organizations, we’re using evidence-based research to affect sustainable change, and challenging governments to do more to ensure everyone can access high quality eye care.

Training

Fred believed that training and empowering local people was the key to sustainable change. The Foundation trains doctors, nurses and health care workers so they can recognize, diagnose, refer and treat eye problems in their communities.

Our Impact

The Fred Hollows Foundation has been at the forefront of a global movement for eye health for over 30 years, championing the belief that everyone has the right to sight. Working hand-in-hand with governments, global organizations, and local communities, we tackle the barriers to effective eye care and build stronger eye health systems. Our work has achieved remarkable impact in reducing blindness and vision loss, empowering individuals, and transforming communities worldwide.

Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a universal commitment to end poverty, protect the environment, and ensure prosperity for all. It is framed by 17 Sustainable Development Goals, six of which we are able to address directly in our sight restoring work. We have committed to applying sustainable development principles in everything we do.

Our Stories

Fred believed in getting things done. Nothing shows the impact of our work better than the stories of people we’ve helped. These are the men, women and children whose lives are changed by the support you give and the work we do to end avoidable blindness.
