The Fred Hollows Foundation
The Fred Hollows Foundation has restored sight to more than 3 million people around the world.
We continue the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows, a globally renowned eye surgeon who believed everyone should have access to high-quality affordable eye care, no matter where they live.
We focus on preventable and treatable diseases such as cataract, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy. Our in-country work involves local training and providing affordable technology, so doctors, nurses and healthcare workers can recognize, diagnose, refer and treat eye problems in their communities. We use research to improve our understanding of avoidable blindness, then use our findings to implement strategies and advocate for change.
From humble beginnings, The Foundation now works in more than 25 countries throughout Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, South East Asia, the Pacific and in remote and underserved communities in Australia.

Professor Fred Hollows
The Foundation continues Professor Fred Hollows’ life work to end avoidable blindness.
Fred Hollows, driven by a passion for social justice and equality, dedicated his life to ensuring that everyone, regardless of where they lived, had access to quality eye care. After his cancer diagnosis, Fred, along with his wife Gabi, founded The Fred Hollows Foundation to continue his mission even after his passing. His relentless efforts and visionary leadership laid the groundwork for The Foundation, which now operates in over 25 countries, restoring sight to millions and striving to eliminate avoidable blindness.
Today, Fred’s legacy lives on through The Foundation’s tireless work, empowering local communities and advocating for change to ensure that no one suffers from preventable blindness.
“It's obscene to let people go blind when they don't have to.”
