Frequently Asked Questions

The Fred Awards

What’s the difference between the Humanity Award and the Fred Awards?

The Fred Awards are an expansion of our annual Humanity Award, which recognises Australian Year 6 students who follow in Fred's footsteps by displaying kindness, compassion and integrity. The Fred Awards will recognise adults who live by these same values and the two awards will run side by side.

What makes the Fred Awards different to all the other awards out there?

The Fred Awards are very much grounded in Professor Fred Hollows’ memory and who he was as a person.

While Fred was a doctor, he never valued position or status – he always recognised the value in everyone - rich or poor - and this award seeks to recognise those everyday people who try to make the world a better place, just like he did.

Unlike many other awards, the Fred Awards will be open for public vote, giving people a chance to vote for who they think should be our Humanitarian of the Year.

Can I nominate someone more than once?

Multiple entries DO NOT increase the nominee’s chance of being selected as a finalist.

The finalists are selected based on the nomination, which should reflect the nominee’s merit and alignment with our values.

Who is eligible to be nominated for the Fred Awards?

There are three essential criteria to be nominated. The person being nominated must be:

  • An Australian resident.
  • Aged 18 years or older.
  • Someone who demonstrates kindness, compassion and integrity.

Who can nominate someone?

Anyone can nominate someone who inspires them and meets the three essential criteria.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Yes, you can make multiple nominations for people who meet the three essential criteria.

What happens once I’ve nominated someone?

You will receive an automated email response confirming your nomination.

In July when nominations close, a panel of judges led by Founding Director Gabi Hollows AO will select one finalist from each state and territory. These eight finalists will then be put forward to public vote and Australians will get the chance to vote for their choice of the Fred Hollows Humanitarian of the Year.

What does the winner get?

The Fred Hollows Humanitarian of the Year will be recognised at a ceremony, where they will be presented with a trophy and a certificate.

If you know someone who lives by the values of kindness, compassion and integrity in their everyday life, nominate them here.
