Sydney's iconic harbour has welcomed another important name from Australia's history with the addition of a ferry named Fred Hollows.

"Fred loved Sydney Harbour and we're very proud," Gabi Hollows said in front of the new vessel.

In August 2016, Transport for NSW announced it would soon receive a fresh ferry fleet and launched a competition to 'Name Your Ferry'.

Thousands of suggestions were received and 'Fred Hollows' made the shortlist.

The public then voted for the fleet to be named from the competition's Science and Medicine category.

The first of the ferries to be unveiled was the 'Catherine Hamlin'.

"Fred was in awe of Catherine  and her husband Reg," Gabi said.

"To have them lined up together, it's just beautiful," she added, admiring Sydney's two newest ferries.

With millions of locals and tourists jumping on board a Sydney Ferry every year, this is a wonderful way to recognise some great Australians.

Thank you to everyone who voted for #FredOnAFerry to make it possible and to help keep Fred’s vision alive in a very unique way.
